Where it came from

Began in the early 20th century, usually dated to the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles in 1906. The name comes from Acts 2 and the day of Pentecost. It has been the fastest-growing Christian movement of the past century, particularly across Latin America, Africa and Asia.

What it holds

• Authority: Scripture alone
• Salvation: by faith, with strong emphasis on personal conversion
• Baptism in the Spirit: usually seen as a distinct experience after conversion, often marked by speaking in tongues
• Gifts: healing, tongues and prophecy are believed to continue today
• Baptism: believer's baptism by immersion
• Governance: varies — some are denominational (such as the Assemblies of God), many are independent

What a service is like

Typically expressive: contemporary music, raised hands, spontaneous prayer, and longer services than most traditions. Some may speak in tongues; people are often invited forward for prayer. Preaching frequently includes improvisation. A first visit can feel intense, but no one will require you to take part in anything.

How it relates to others

Closely linked to the charismatic movement, which brought the same experience into Catholic, Anglican and other existing churches. The main difference with more conservative evangelicals is whether these gifts continue today.
